Model XBR-65X900E, 3 black boxes on the left side of the screen. Rest of picture is normal.

New client, he has called Sony more than once, tried some things with no success. They indicate a factory reset is required and instructed him to disconnect everything in his system from the television or it could mess up the rest of the system.

I don’t mind heading over and doing a reset for him, but the part about messing up the rest of his system sounds like some kind of voodoo to me.

Have any of you seen this issue?

So he gets those black box overlays on all video sources or just OTA, and they are always in the some position on the screen?

In fact, he gets etc etc including OTA?
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

My Sony TV, don’t know the model number at the moment. Had an issue with the bottom part of the screen. It literally looked like the screen was cracked and the top 3/4 was fine.

As soon as I pressed anything to do with the OSD. Whether it was the menu, info or input select. The entire screen was fine.

I ended up unplugging it for a few minutes and plugging it back in. All is fine, has been for about a month. I suppose the chip that selects the inputs was faulty. And the chip that displays the OSD is after that input selector chip.

I know it’s not the same problem though. If your client hasn’t unplugged the TV for 5-10 minutes. Have them try that, just the power cord. I left everything else, input wise, plugged in.

Had an x950G lose pic while client was watching and rebooted via OvrC for a while. No dice, but the back light still worked. Did a soft reset by pressing power on factory remote for 30 sec, no dice. Then did a hard reset, removed all ins & outs, removed power, pressed and held bottom two of three buttons and reapplied power until power light went green and released, no dice but the familiar android sound came out. Was able to RMA (within 60 days of install date), but we chucked the box and feet. This model is no longer available but they may replace with the “h” series. Regardless, it’s been a gigantic PitA and has us questioning supplying pedestrian displays (again).

Just an FYI, we have a clause in our contracts that states consumers who purchase any display from us and could potentially use us for warranty service, must store the original packaging.

It's helped in the few situations I've needed it.

Smart. One of our partners forced clients to do this and I told him it was unnecessary. My B.

In home service on a big TV, why you need a box??

Because they don't always have in-home service available (at least not in this area).
What they do then is send a call tag, for the shipper to pickup the TV. Don't have a box? Sony well charge you for one and ship it to you.
Want advanced replacement, give them a CC # and they ship a refurb out to you before getting the defective one back.
