I have an in-law who wants a camera system for his house. Has to be very inexpensive, no “cloud recording” WiFi devices allowed, and has to have app-based viewing. I’m interested in experiences of the Metra Spyclops line (since we use them for cables anyway), or if someone has a recommendation of something other than that in the same price range (4 cams/nvr <$500 my cost), I would love to hear it.

You must love your in-laws very much because going ultra cheap will mean you'll be visiting and hearing from them very, very often!

So true. I've gotten to the point of just saying, "pony up for what I suggest or you're on your own!"

I like my MIL, just not that much to put anything tech in her house. Good luck.
Alibi has some nice packages too that will meet your price point. And good support.
I may be schizophrenic, but at least I have each other.

Hik usually has kits in that price range.  I had 1 NVR failure with one but otherwise they have been reliable for a cheap solution.

Interesting claim.
BUT NOT TRUE.
The only connection to Hikvision is the ability to recognize their camera profile.
In fact we can be used in Govt. facilities.
Plus, our tech support is right here in beautiful Daytona Beach Fl.
