Sub has been working fine for a few years. Client reported that it stopped working. After testing i discovered that it powers up and does output sound...barely loud enough to hear...but only if its turned all the way up. I am scheduled back tomorrow and Wednesday so i brought it home with me. Same problem when connected to my surround system.

I assume its the amp but i wont know until i have time to test it tomorrow. What would be your guess?

Triad Bronze Omnisub 10" "first generation". Okay not officially a first gen product but this model was disco'd and replaced with an updated model.

Hi Mac,

We had a lot of these go bad and it was the amp. Tech support said something like "this is a known issue, bad cap on the board" or something like that.

That's sort of the conundrum of active subs. They're essentially paint shakers with amps inside them. Pretty brutal environment for an amp, when you think about it.

JBL, Revel and Velodyne all come to mind *immediately* when I think of the brands that were lined up at the shop, guts ripped out and sent in for repair.

We had failures as well with those models. Back when Triad was Triad they took care of them by upgrading them to the new version. I’m not sure how this would get handled in the current “environment “.

Definitely the plate amp. We have a project with 3 of these. 1 failed a couple years ago. Triad replaced it under warranty with the newer model i posted above.

Today i swapped woofers in the two remaining subs. Problem didn't move. Then i tried moving the known sub to the problem area and it worked fine so that rules out AVR & cabling.

It would be nice to just replace the amp and keep the sub because the cabinet its in has the bottom cut out so it can sit on the floor. If i cant find a sub that fits i have to get my hands dirty like a common wiremunky :).

We sold the big end table sized JMLabs for a decade and never had an issue with them. I have had a bunch of issues with smaller form factor active subs though.

Try Loudspeaker City in Burbank, CA. Email info@speakercity.com or call 818-846-9921. Tell 'em a friend of Howard's referred them.
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.
