I need help with a Directv Genie system. I have a client that was sent product to upgrade their system. They have 2 HS17-500 Genie2's and 11 C41W-100 clients.

From what I have found researching so far is that you can have 8 clients on a Genie but only stream to 3 at a time. I have also been told only 1 Genie per account but they were sent 2, can they have 2?

It is very important that recorded content can be watched anywhere. If you can have 2 Genies in a system, can content recorded on one be watched on the other? If not is there another way to do this?

I have done systems before with HR24 DVR's set up with whole home DVR, just did not have this many receivers.

This is on a yacht and they recently upgraded the antenna to a Intellian s100HD worldview. From what I found this antenna will do what I need.

I am checking with multiple sources, but wanted to post the question here also.

oh boy!!!!!

genie 2 can have 11 clients, 2 of which can be 4k. 8 can stream simultaneously.

you can definitely NOT have 2 genies on an account.

if you have a genie 2, you cannot have ANY other non genie/client receiver on system. no HR24, H24, H25, etc.

100% correct. Also residential accounts are being limited to 8 receiver's total. This may change soon but is giving us problems right now.

I just did a house with [1] HR54, [3] clients (because that is the max stream at once for a HR54), and [11] H25 receivers. For a total of 15 TV locations.

Is that 8 total receivers a limitation of the Genie 2 (HS17) accounts? That would make more since if it is. AT&T is crippling any custom installs (large # of receivers) with the new hardware.

If you know the history of AT&T, it’s really sad what the company has become. We wouldn’t have made it to the moon without AT&T [Bell Labs].

No idea how they have two HS17s unless there are two accounts and two dishes.

Their service went from better than average to a near failing score.

The wife is a DTV direct dealer for res & commercial.

The talk is AT&T wants out of the DTV relationship.

It's brand new as in the last few weeks but we have 2 12+ receiver installs waiting on DTV to figure this out. Keep getting the run around with DTV saying to do a commercial account but then no genie. It's driving us nuts. Not to mention the money being lost.

How would the above be written if, instead of saying "receivers," we reverted to the term "tuners"? As in "The HR25 is one receiver, but two tuners"?

How many actual tuners does the HS17 have? Or is it not that simple any more?

A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

Sounds like a sales rep screwed up on the order. But when they go to activate, they are in for a rude awaking. Because as already mentioned, DirecTV will not allow 2 Genies on the same account anymore.

Two dishes? You can run hundreds of tuners off a single dish with the right headend. There is NEVER a reason to have more than 1 dish - unless we are talking a dish for additional sat slots (like international channels).
Or a wiring issue, where it is more feasible to put a dish near where another group of receivers are going; ex. pool house, detached garage, electrician wired estate home :)

I replied to your PM.

To answer this: In the past when we had issues. We would just get the customer a 4 room system (specifically HR54 and 3 clients). Then order a bunch of H25's for the rest of the locations. After the system is active, just call up and add all the boxes to the account. Never had an issue with that approach, however convoluted it was.
The problem with the above is 4K. Since the HR54 can only support 1 4K feed at a time. As mentioned, the new HS17 (Genie 2) can support several 4K streams [but still not that many]. But with the new HS17, you can not use H25. You are stuck with client boxes only. Which limits the total amount of TV locations to a hard number.

Honestly the best bet for the customer is to dump DirecTV and not sign into another 2 year commitment. And either go with the local cable company or DishNetwork. You can put several 4K DVRs (Hoppers) on an account with lots of 4K clients (Joeys).
Every customer that has DirecTV I run into, I am telling them the likely future they will have and what they are now missing out on. It is only the diehard, long time, DirecTV customers that are still sticking with it. Despite the obvious train wreck that is happening and what is most likely to be the death of DirecTV satellite service (eventually - 1 year, 2, 3, ???). Unless Murdoch wants to buy it back and turn it around... not likely.

H25... there is no such thing as an HR25. H25 is single receiver, single tuner. And only works on SWM.
And if you want an RF remote for it, you have to get the RF plugin receiver separate. And it uses the old style RC6# RF remotes, not the new RC7# series remotes.

How many actual tuners does the HS17 have? Or is it not that simple any more?

7 tuners. So 2 more tuners than last generation Genies. Which directly translate to the use of 5 clients at once on the HS17, instead of only 3 at once like on the last generation Genie. And the 2 4K clients at once on the HS17, instead of only 1 4K client at once.

Do you mean they're trying to get rid of it, or they're just stupid short-sighted asses?

Take your pick.
