I'm about to specify a Ring Doorbell Pro and the new Floodlight Cam for an existing client. I'd be interested in hearing about general experience with the line, but have a specific question:

Does the Ring Doorbell have a contact to actuate the existing doorbell chime or is the Ring Chime required for a traditional chime sound inside the house?

TIA

I don't think so on the contact. I know they're coming out with a new flush mount version, not sure on additional options..........

The Ring and Ring Pro do have a contact on the back. They are powered by those contacts from the existing doorbell and power supply loop as well as have the ability to close the contact to ring the old bell.

OK...So I do NOT have to BUY a new chime to retain existing doorbell chime functionality...Do I understand correctly?

Correct. The Ring CAN chime your old mechanical or digital chime

Yes.

The Ring Chime is for homes that do not have a working chime (which is a lot of them).

On that note, it's worth the effort to keep a couple doorbell transformers on the truck. Even when the house is wired for a lighted doorbell that could power a Ring, they seem to be broken even when the client says that 'everything worked before'.

Excellent info, guys. Have you and your clients had positive experiences with the RING product line overall?

Have to add a transformer now because the 12vac won't keep the keypad charged.

The upload needs to be at least 2mbps. 5 is more realistic. DSL in my area cannot provide a decent upload, so the video usually catches the back side of whoever rang the bell and walked away.

Ring doorbell and ring doorbell pro are great. Ensure you have good wifi at the button location with the door closed. They can be finicky with wifi. They say it will work with most digital chimes but we are at about a 50% rate of them working and not. Mechanical chimes no problem. When we needed an actual dry contact to trigger automation or whatever, we have used a 24Vac transformer with a 24vac coil relay.

Stay away from the stick up cams. They advertise a 12 month battery life with normal use before needing a recharge but it's more like 3-4 weeks with actual use. Ring defines normal use as 2 motion or live view events per day. Inside or outside, if there is enough action to need a camera, there is likely more than 2 events a day. Client was pissed and had us take them out.

Look forward to trying the floodlight cam.

I installed a Ring Pro yesterday in my home. No existing door bell but I ran dual Cat 6 to the front door. I used a 16v ac (40 va) power supply that I already had with one of those Cat 6 wires. Everything works fine.

But how can you get a contact trigger from the Ring Pro being activated or button push? There are only 2 contact points on the back for power. Please explain. Ring doesn't have any documentation in the box or on their web site and their support dept doesn't condone any 3rd party integration. I don't even get how a Ring button push would trigger an existing door chime

The very first thing you will do is turn off the motion sensing crap that sends your phone notifications. Unless of course you want 357 notifications a day, then have at it!

Pro Power Kit is how you connect a ring pro to an existing door chime.

The Ring Pro has 2 wires that hook up to it for powering it. It has a small battery in it so it can close contact to trigger the old doorbell.

The BlackWire Driver integration is 100% authorized and supported by Ring. We have a signed API agreement with them. You do not use your user name and password to maintain the connection. I attached a screen shot which shows the Ring URL and the BlackWire name.
