Upcoming job for a client that bought a house with high-end dedicated home theater and separate 2-channel setup in the living room.  The theater is being turned into an office and they don't have any interest in the two channel setup, but want whole house audio.

I only got involved in reselling equipment once for a client a long time ago and said I'd never do it again, but this client has some valuable gear so I think it might be worthwhile.

Biggest problem is the 103" Panasonic plasma in the theater.  I've never installed one, but can imagine that it's going to be difficult to remove, transport and then potentially crate for shipping to non-local buyer.

I'm familiar with the Audiogone & Videogon sites, but haven't been able to establish an idea of value for the 103" plasma (haven't found a used one listed for sale).  Anyone know what these are going for on the used market?  Any advice from someone that's installed one or process to remove and how it was originally packaged would be helpful.

Other equipment is McIntosh, Krell, Audio Research, PS Audio, Lexicon, Wilson Audio, B&W

I am glad I am not in your shoes. That display weighs a ton and sadly probably has very little value except to a niche client.

Luckily I have never had to install one, but have several take over customers who have them. I am not looking forward to the day the unit dies. Even an entry level projector screen looks better IMHO...

It's probably worth a significant amount, however the problem will be finding the right buyer willing to take the risk.

I can't imagine it would be worth doing for anything other than a local sale.

I'll give you $1k and cover shipping. :)

Post the list of the 2-channel stuff too please! I'm still a bit of a 2ch geek. Maybe someone else is too and you can get that stuff sold to some happy CIs. Too many logistics with Audiogon and eBay and such....not to mention fees. Yuck.

That is going to be one tough sale. Who has that kind of cash floating around? And if you did, why buy such an expensive TV thats out of warranty?

If i had to guess 12-15k as panasonic slashed the price to 50k for a brand new one (and there is some company on ebay selling 4 brand new ones for 33k) which probably means a new one is coming out fairly soon.

Not sure of access to the theater but if its down in a basement and access is difficult i could see it costing just as much in wall removal, trim & door removal etc and then the cost of replacing all of the stuff removed just to get the thing out. Not to mention the cost of the crew you would need to bring in to get that sucker out and then of course the logistics of crating it properly as minimize shipping damage.

Thats a tough one im glad im not in your shoes! Offer it "Free" to anyone who comes and gets it? ;)

I would suggest the client sell it.

If they're not interested in selling it themselves, I'd put it out on Ebay with "local pick up only" requirement.

Client needs to know it'll sell for whatever it sells for, and the buyer needs to know they must remove it within a predetermined amount of time.

I suppose a buyer could hire some specialty moving company, like piano movers, to remove and transport that monster.

Nice.

Audiogon will eat that stuff up.

Best of luck with that 103.

The best case scenario is to put it up on AVS forum and let some enthusiast get a screaming deal.

I think that 3pedalmini's estimate of $15k is VERY optimistic, IMO.

I would be surprised if you get more than $4-5k honestly, especially if you want to move it really quickly. Maybe $7-8 at the max if you can babysit ads for a while and sort through some BS from strokes.

Have the client hire a moving company to pack and move the display to client provided storage (their garage, public storage whatever). Assist them with the uninstall but let them handle the rest.

Let the client know that you do not sell products for clients. Suggest that they list the products on Videogon/ebay/craigslist. If it sells great if it doesn't its not taking up space in your warehouse and you aren't fielding the "did it sell yet" calls.

I think Rick is spot on with his estimate of $8k max. Maybe if you get lucky and find the one guy who really really wants that TV...

Paul, that sucker is over 440Lbs.
Show your client this website: www.bestbuypcs.com/panasonic-th-103pf12u-103-1080p-hd-plasma-display-best-price.html
They have it listed for $10K, new.
Explain that there is little ROI and offer to take it home for free and coordinate the removal.
What happens if someone damages walls/floors moving/removing this monster.
Do you (or your client) really want(s) eBay/Craiglist crown in his(their) house?

damn, they'll deliver it for free too - you just have to wait 2-3 weeks and be around to bring it inside since its curbside delivery.

As you guys point out, the TV is going to be a logistical nightmare to deal with.  I'll have the liability of damage when moving, storing and shipping unless I hire all this out but I don't know if I'm really going to find anyone else willing to do it either.  I don't think your run of the mill moving company would touch it.

It's a single story home with easy paths out the front door, so I think the TV could be placed on dollies and maybe even removed with a lift.

This is a second home for the client and it's getting a light remodel.  Structurally it's staying the same except for moving some walls and doors, but almost all the interior finished are being replaced so damage to walls, floors, ceilings isn't a concern.  I'll actually be doing a significant retrofit wiring job that will require lots of holes anyway.

The clients is based in NY and won't really be around for 6-9 months during the remodel so they don't have any time or desire to do anything with the old equipment themselves.  We spoke yesterday and I think they are going to give the Watt Puppys to the home's previous owner as a gift for helping them sort out some details with the house after purchase.

The only reason I'm considering this is I think there is a minimum of $20-$30k equipment (used value), and I'll probably ask for 30% so I think it can be worth my time.  The previous owner even kept boxes for most of the electronics which will make packing & shipping easier.

I need to get back over for a full inventory this week.  I've only been onsite twice and both times where for meetings that included the clients, designer, architects, builders, etc. so I wasn't really able to gather much information.
