No one in the Complete Control forum seems to have one of these yet, so I'll re-post here and maybe some of you installers can help with this:

I'm doing CCP programming for a new MX-890 (which will arrive this week), but have run into a problem in working with button layouts.

This is done in Page View. There should be an easy way to swap buttons between the pages of any device. I can swap within a single page OK, but not from page to page.

There as yet is no programming manual specific to the MX-890. So I am using the general CCP manual, as well as manuals for a couple of other models. Each shows slightly different ways to swap buttons between pages, the later models using the Alt or Alt-Shift keys. But the only thing that happens is a Paste Special dialogue comes up, which has no option to swap. If I do try to use it, odd things sometimes happen --- like other buttons disappearing, losing the ability to add a button to a page, and losing the ability to swap on the same page. If I fiddle with this long enough, the program crashes.

There is a workaround, but it's a lot of extra work and a real pain.

There was a software update from URC yesterday, but it had no effect on this problem. I'm running Windows 7 64-bit.

Thanks.

Phil

OK, I thought I was missing something.

I wonder why URC would release the software with such an obvious glitch?

Really? You must be new to this :-)

Read the agreement again. In it, it clearly states that you agree to be an alpha and beta tested for any product. Further, reporting such bugs will in no way obligate the MFG to do anything about it, but if they do, even if its years later, it's only because they're an awesome company and you should be eternally grateful.

Sorry, I feel like being a d*(k sometimes :-)

On a serious note, contact tech support and open a ticket. They'll fix it in 2 weeks :-)

Yeah...I am guessing very new. As in DIY. Didnt know Mike gave out software. If so, bummer.

Mine seems to be swapping the buttons back-and-forth between pages okay, but I have had some buttons mysteriously disappear also...

I have another question for you programmers. I have sold exclusively MX-900's for the last couple of years because they are just solid and simple to program. Now I need to step up to the newer remotes. I downloaded CCP and took the online tutorial. I wanted to take the on-line class specifically for the MX-890, but they don't have it up yet. So, when I am building my pages and use the image gallery, I found images for sources Directv, Ipod, PS3, etc. but I cannot find where they store the channel image buttons (CNN, ESPN, etc.)

Please give a newbie a hint.

Thanks.

They are on the right hand column "Image Gallery" tab. It may be blank once you select it, from there you would press the "..." button on the top right and there are folders for Favorites, Devices, Brands etc.
The less I say, the smarter I will appear

Yeah, I found all of the folders in the Image Gallery, but there is not one for "Favorites" for some reason in the MX-890 programming...
I found a "CNN" button in the "Blanks-Large" folder, but no other channel buttons. I have literally clicked and opened every folder and can't find one with just channel icons in it.

I am still waiting for my 890 but I was trying a new layout and ran into the
same thing...no favorites anywhere.

While there are no favorite channel icons in the remote currently (hopefully they add some as there is a Favorite Channel icon option in the image browser), you can easily add custom buttons. You may have to search for the channel icons you want or make some yourself. You will have to resize them. I believe they had to be one size on the MX880, but am not 100% sure. The MX890 definitely does not have to be one size. I tried 88x59, 114x76, and 135x90. All three sizes worked, and displayed fine on the remote. If you go too large though, the buttons will not have proper distance between them. 135x90 would be considered too large for me as it extends beyond the midpoint of the screen. You will then have to place the icons in a new folder that you will place under:

C:\Program Files\Universal Remote Control, Inc\Complete Control Program\MX-890\Images\Buttons & Backgrounds\Custom Buttons

note: This is the location of the folders on my WinXP machine. It may differ on yours. The Custom Buttons folder is a new folder I created. From within CCP, you can create a button

It's very easy to do and the bulk of your work will be finding the right icons and resizing them or creating new icons on your own.

I added several icons to show basically how it looks. These icons are 114x76 and I added a slight bevel in photoshop. I found these icons by randomly searching for TV Channel Icons on google. You can see here that there really isn't enough spacing, so in this case it would be better to make the icons a little smaller:

The next picture is a couple of shots from a job I did a while back. This is an example of how you can create a button to choose your zone. These icons are larger at 150x105. You can see they are really too large, as they take up more than one row of buttons on the remote. Here I created a combined button on the top and bottom row of virtual buttons, while the middle row is blank:

Just a couple quick examples and sorry for the poor iPhone shots.

And here I created smaller icons (108x72). You can see the spacing is much better. Also note that you can move the icons around either with your mouse, or by highlighting the icons and moving them with the arrow keys (arrow keys are easier). The icons in the first picture could also have been fixed by just adjusting the spacing, I just thought it looked a little cleaner with the smaller icon when I uploaded it. Either size works well though:

Okay, glad I'm not just missing something. Thanks for the info and the examples, much appreciated!
