Following up on the nesting birds thread at [Link: remotecentral.com] ...

I live in an apartment where there's a pit bull next door. He's quiet when his people are home, but sometimes when they're gone he will bark once every 1 to 3 seconds for hours on end.

Three doors down there's a chihuahua that sometimes yips for hours on end.

Assuming I can get a LOUD high frequency horn, and I know where to get a high power amplifier, does anyone know of a particular range of frequencies that I can point toward these criminals that might make them shut the hell up? I'd just push a button after each bark, I think....

May the ideas flow!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

The barking dogs are not the criminals. Have you tried talking to the real criminals, the owners of the dogs?

Record the dogs. Replay looped at volume for when dog's owners are home.

most localities have laws for nuisance animals...see what your local animal control says...if you want to try audio go with some pizeo horn tweeters and kick about 150dB of 60K and see how they like it :) or you could try a tub of peanut butter, that would keep the dog occupied for a good while.

About 2 years out of college, I bought a house. The neighbors on one side of me had a dog that would wait until about 3am, and decide to start barking. The neighbors bedroom was on the other side of the house, and they seemed not to notice it.

The next day I discussed it with them, and got the imfamous, "We don't hear it, so not sure what we can do." So that night, in the wee hours, when he started barking, I knocked on their front door, until the light came on, and they opened the door quite pissed. I explained if I couldn't sleep because of their dog, I'd make sure they knew their dog was keeping me up!

This went on for a couple nights, and then I got a visit from the police telling me that I was disturbing the peace! They said the dog was not their jurisdiction, but to stop waking the neighbors. Dog Control was worthless, as they didn't want to show up in the wee hours, and wouldn't take my word for it.

I like dogs, but at this point I figured it was time for some Pavlovian training. It was February in Michigan, nightly temperature of about 25F. So that evening I pulled the hose out of the garage, hooked it up to the hose bib on that side of the house, put a nozzle on the end, and made sure it dripped slowly so as not to freeze.

About 2:30am the dog starts in again. I went outside, peeked over the fence, and hosed the dog down until he went back in his doghouse. Started walking back toward my house, and the dog started in again... So I hosed him down again, until he went back in his doghouse. He came half way out, and made one half hearted bark, and I hosed him down again. We played this game for about an hour, and I began to hose him down when he even came out of the doghouse. He had to be miserable... eventually I walked back inside, and didn't hear from him again.

I planned to do the same thing the next night, but didn't hear a peep from the dog. That was the last I heard from him at night.

I would have preferred to hose down the neighbors!

So, your idea of a loud high pitch might work. I would suggest that you probably can get away with a frequency of 20KHz or so, as most peoples hearing becomes very directional above 14-15KHz, and it will likely not be an issue, and probably no one but the dogs will hear it. At adequate SPL levels, that will be pushing some good power into a tweeter. Better get yourself a good brand or you'll blow it pretty quickly with a solid tone. Some of the Electro-Voice horn tweeters I've seen would stand up to that sort of punishment.

This is exactly what has happened every time i have tried to talk to people about their dogs. I wont bother anymore. Someone else will be the asshole who is complaining about their dog. In my neighborhood in Chicago it never went on for very long. Someone would poison the offending dog if left outside. Same with the viscous junk yard dogs with flimsy fences. The ones that will violently try and get at you as you pass the persons property. All they had to do was scare the wrong kid and the next day.. no more dog.

Now i live in the suburbs. The guy straight across from me leaves 1 dog in the house on the second floor with the window open. The damn thing barks 24 hours a day. I'm going to shoot a video of it when i get home to show you guys. Its ridiculous. They have the other dog outside, the husbands home all the time and he doesn't seem to mind that you can hear the dog blocks away barking all day.

The house behind us...1 to the left has 3 dogs in the yard 24 hours a day. They are never inside the house. They sit at the back door and bark all the time.

I really don't understand why/how someone would put up with that. If it were my dog and i couldn't get it to stop barking... it wouldn't be my dog anymore.

I don't know about the right frequencies, but if you want to discuss about gauge, I think .22 LR or .38 would be a good start.

Ernie,
[Link: lapdonline.org]

Record the barking say for an hour and play the tape for animal control.

Here is another idea:

Nothing that some raw hamburger laced with antifreeze won't fix.  Don't give it to the dog, give it to the neighbor, neighbor dies, dog gets taken to the pound. :)

Very simple.

The apartment managers won't help?

On topic.... Let us know if you do find a sound based solution. I'm very curious what works.

My handle is Tweety but I have nothing to do with the organization of similar name. I just had a really big head as a child so folks called me tweety bird.

My neighbor had a dog that barked all day & night. The owner often did not come home at night - and I politely left messdages and notes to zero reponse. On friday night I called and left a message that the dog was really getting on my nerves and that she, the owner has to do something about it, cause it was keeping my whole family awake.
Next morning I'm enjoying a cup of coffee on my front porch & guess what??? The police roll-up because she filed a harrassment charge against me!

Why some people have dogs is beyond me.

Ernie, talk to your Apt. manager, or the building's owner... maybe get a few neighbors to all complain together to the manager.

My apartment manager is non-existent. There's a house up front with a Korean family who are there about 40% of the time, and three units in back; I'm in one of them.

I located the owner of the apartment with the freakin' Chihuahua and called his phone number every time the dog was barking late at night. It was just an office messge machine, but he got the message. Then he called to tell me he couldn't control things and I had to talk with Animal Control.

I just previewed the Tim Burton exhibit at LACMA and he's the first person I've seen who really knows how to draw and depict the full evilness of chihuahuas.

As for the neighbors next door with the pit bull, the little I've seen of them, they've just scowled at me. Something about them being black and my girfriend (not me) being black seems not to sit well with them. Hey, this is not a politically correct forum -- we need to speak the truth here. So anyway, I doubt I'll get a welcome or an understanding hearing at their front door.

Thanks for the gallows humor regarding extermination, but I'd never do that. At 3:00 AM, or when I'm in the office for three hours listening to barking, it does briefly fly through my imagination, though.
