The most interesting part of the official blog post on the new adapter is the line "it is NOT designed for use with other remote controls". OK - so what in particular makes it unsuitable?

Assuming that the commands for this device are stored under Game System (with DVD) -> Sony -> PlayStation 3, then it would appear that this caution is due to the adapter using a custom codeset. Unlike all other PS3 control solutions, it does not use the standard Sony DVD+PS2 codeset, which is probably a good idea since it's likely that a lot of Harmony users may already have a Sony DVD player. It appears to use a protocol known as "pid-0066".

Of course with other adapters, they'd merely give you the codes in a file - however Logitech is in the business of selling Harmony accessories to Harmony owners, so they're not likely to go out of their way to make it easy to use with competing universal remotes.

But if you have a computer programmable remote, then I've already gone to the trouble of sorting out the new codes and have uploaded both decoded results, Pronto hex and a Pronto CCF for your PS3'ing enjoyment.

Thanks, Daniel. When I read your article about the new unit , I couldn't see why you couldn't use it with other remotes. I'm using an IR2BT right now, but I might just give this Harmony unit a try.

I'm using the USB dongle of a nyko PS3 IR remote, which I learned into a harmony 880. Only thing it can't do is turn the unit on and off, which isn't that big of a deal. I believe it was 10 bucks.

For many people, the IR-to-USB converters are just fine. They offer basic control at an inexpensive price.

For others, they really want to be able to power the PS3 on, and have access to all supported commands. It's all on what you feel is worth the money.

Just wondering what you mean at the bottem when you say, it shows ps3 but its not a distinct command?

Im looking at the schmart device because of power sensing, i dont always use the remote to turn on the ps3, sometimes when i put in a game, i turn it on, on the machine itself. And then its out of sync. Does logitech have codes that work around this on/off problem (since the ps3 button turns it on, and the ps3 button is also used to turn it off) if they worked around this using codes it would be great, but schmart seems to be the only one and he has a usb cable for the ps3 to sense wether its off and on.

Logitech's database has a "PS3 Off" function listed for this adapter, however it is not a unique command. Whenever I learn it, all I get is the command associated with the [PS] button. Which most likely means that the "PS3 Off" function as listed is merely a shutdown macro that plays back on the Harmony (and I haven't managed to learn the final few commands). The only other possibility is that a sustained press of [PS] triggers an onboard macro, however this seems unlikely. I'll know more when I get an adapter.

The Logitech has absolutely no onboard PS3 power tracking. So there's no hardware monitoring support, and not even onboard variable tracking - remember, the Harmony remote itself has variable-based tracking of device power status, so they expect you to use that. This adapter really *is* meant for Harmony owners. Of course, variable-based tracking can get out-of-sync with something like the PS3 that's prone to turning on very easily! :-)

Three PS3 adapters currently have hardware power monitoring. Audio Authority BlueBeam (although it has yet to be enabled in software), IR2BTci (most sophisticated options so far) and the Schmartz PS3IR-1000 (as you mention).

I received the Harmony Adapter, and the power off macro is definitely not stored on-board. Which is probably a safety feature, in case it needs to be changed in the future (I'm actually surprised that Logitech wasn't able to get Sony to add a proper shutdown command - I'm sure they pull some weight).

I just want to point out that the PS3IR1000 and BlueBeam track the power via one of the USB ports of the PS3 whereas the IR2BTci uses a Xantech Magnetic Sensor Module.

Im also surprised the logitech did not get sony to add a different power off command. Unless they get them to in a ps3 firmware upgrade. But then all devices could just copy the ir command.

I went ahead and ordered the schmart 1000 because i needed power sensing. I seem to be in the minority, people must be alot better then me at using there remotes. To often when i went to play a game I would turn the ps3 on, on the machine itself, throwing it out of sync.

I figured logitech maybe able to get sony to add a power off command completely seperate from turning it on (or using the ps key) but I guess not.

Just to clarify, Jim - the IR2BTci can also track the power via one of the USB ports on the PS3 or with the Xantech sensor. And according to Daniel's post above, the BlueBeam USB power tracking isn't enabled in software yet.

Due to a report of issues using these codes with the Pronto NG (and on my further testing, problems when importing into URC remotes) I've re-learned all commands using a different Harmony source and using a different model Pronto for capture.

In poking around the Harmony database, I've noticed that they've added a "long PS" command (obviously a sustained PS hold), as well as three new commands: Back, Options and View. However these are merely duplicates of "Cross", "Triangle" and "Square" respectively. I actually think they have the "Back" mapping wrong - it should reference "Circle", not "Cross" (which is normally Enter/Select).

I've figured out how to make the system power down, so please feel free to add it to the download file

Create a new button called "System Off" and create the following steps
Link to PS
Link to PS
Link to PS
Link to PS
Link to PS
Delay 1.00 Sec
Link to Enter
Delay 1.00 sec
Link to Enter

That works a treat. Hope that helps!

Just purchased the adaptor direct for £26.99 from Logitech for my TSU7000.

System off button works perfectly.

Thanks to lovegroova and Daniel :)

It's been a while since this topic has been discussed so I am resurrecting it.

I want to get a Harmony PS3 adapter to work with my MX-350. My plan was to learn the remote codes to my MX-350 from my friends Harmony One.

Will this work?
If learning doesn't work, what are my options?
Will I also be able to turn ON and OFF the PS3?
Is there a better solution out there for PS3 (trying to avoid harmony remote)?

Thanks for the help.
