I am looking for a cheap solution for controlling my ps3 via my logitech harmony 720 remote. Which solution would be better? The way I see it is that the harmony will be an easier solution at first, but it might also be nice to have the ps3IR-500 because it has a built in power off macro and is $20 less.

What are your opinions?

There's really no difference in the amount of work either would take to configure. The PS3IR-500 is smaller, costs less, and will be easier to work with if you ever have a non-Harmony remote due to it using standard IR codes and having built-in variable tracking.

One upside to the Harmony one is that it includes a power adapter.

Will I run into any problems with the PS3IR-500 since both it and the remote has variable tracking? Like if they get out of sync with each other and the PS3?

I'd go with the PS3IR-500. I'm using the PS3IR-1000 with an MX-3000 and it has worked flawless so far. I friend of mine tried the Harmony solution since he had the Harmony One and he sent it back because he found it unreliable.

I also have a Harmony 720 in house but I don't use it for the system with the PS3. I could easily try a test though to see how it works with the PS3IR adapter.

You can always disable the tracking on the PS3IR-500... or the Harmony.

If you're referring to the ability of the Schmartz device to sense whether the PS3 is on or off that is not a feature of the PS3IR500. The power sensing capability is one of the additional features of the PS3IR1000 with optional cable.

I haven't actually used a 500, however I was told both the 500 and 1000 have variable-based power tracking, while the 1000 also adds true power sensing.
