Lowpro,

You inspired me to buy a TSU9600 to try and control my Sony 400disc changer as well. It's on order and hopefully I'll have it later this week. But in preparation for the remote and the DVD Juke, I also got the latest DVD Profiler software and started cataloging my collection in the player as you suggested. However, I can't figure out how to add the second blank disc for titles that have extra feature discs. My first problem came with the extended edition LotR trilogy boxes. The software recognized the disc and associated 3 other discs with each box. But it only gives one collection ID for the set. When I tried to enter the subsequent discs manually by inserting them into my PC they were recognized but I got an error when I tried to add it to my collection (hopefully as a new ID#) as it said they were already in my collection.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Wayne

In order to add the additional discs for a given title, so that each disc has its own Collection ID you need to manually add them. This is done via the "Add by Title" tab. From this tab uncheck the box, "Download profile from Invelos" then fill in the title field and add the disc.

Are the bulk of your images .png or .jpg. JPG files should take less space then .png files. You can also alter the amount of (lossy) compression if you are willing to give up some quality. Jpg compression works by breaking the image up into 8 x 8 squares starting at the upper left corner. In each 8x8 square reduces the number of different colors in the 64 dots. For example if there are 2 red's and 2 light blue's that are very close to each other, the program reduces it to 1 red and 1 light blue, and marks both reds the same and both light blues the same. The more compression you ask for when doing the compression the more colors are removed and made the same. The trick is to reduce the number colors until it starts to show. Just consider that in the 64 dots they are all a shade of green, then reduce the number of shade's to 4 to 6. This would be a big compression without much change in color. If on the other hand the 64 colors are all over the rainbow, cutting the number of colors down to 4 to 6 could be very destructive. One way to help the compression when you are doing graphics over pictures is to reduce colors that do not matter as much. If your background is a blue gradient with pictures on the background. By changing the background to a solid "Single" color of blue, the compression will not waist any colors on several shades of blue. Each 64 bit square is considered separately when doing the compression.

I hope this helps.

I use PNG images exclusively using the "Save for web..." option in Photoshop. Each are saved at the lowest color depth possible which still maintains what I'd consider acceptable image quality, so as to minimize the size of each image file which ends up getting downloaded to the remote as an end result. Only on rare occasion will I save an image as a 24-bit PNG for instance. These are cases where severe dithering would occur otherwise as seen in the remote. As for JPG images, when you insert a JPG image to your configuration file the editor converts it to a 24-bit bitmap. As such, it is not possible to take advantage of the JPG format as you've outlined as said JPG files never make it natively into the XCF, much less get downloaded to the remote. JPG support is nothing more than a "let me convert that to a (bloated) 24-bit bitmap for you" which is the last thing you want if you are concerned about utilizing the paltry 64 megs of memory in the remote in the most efficient manner possible. During the beta test of the editor prior to initial release I tested out the JPG support which as documented clearly gives the user the impression the file type is natively supported. As you can imagine, with the large number of image files in my XCF I was extremely excited per the space savings JPG images would provide. Didn't take me but a few test runs to discover what was actually happening sad to say. While true JPG support never came to be I was hoping at the very least the JPG support provided would be clearly defined in the documentation. It was not unfortunately.

LP's TSU9600 XM Radio Channel Logos:
For those interested my current XM Radio Logos are now available for download. The channel logos cover the compliment of XM's channel offerings as of June 2009. The graphics used were taken from the Channel Lineup PDF document posted at XM's website while at 225% zoom in Adobe Reader. Screenshots taken from my TSU9600 configuration file are available below for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

XM Radio Favorites: 01, 02
XM Radio Music: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 10
XM Radio News: 01, 02, 03
XM Radio Sports: 01, 02, 03
XM Radio More: 01, 02, 03, 04
XM Radio Keypad: 01

Per these channel logos...
The surrounding part of each button is actually a panel using a PNG transparency. The actual buttons containing each channel logo do not use a PNG transparency and are positioned on top of their respective background panels as seen here. This method allowed for quite a substantial savings in memory once downloaded to the remote as only the background panel which is used to visually make up the surrounding part of each button had to be saved as a 24-bit PNG to retain a clean PNG transparency. The actual graphics used for each channel logo could then be saved at a much lower color depth reducing the file size of each significantly.

Additional notes:
The below download link is to a stripped down version of my TSU9600 XM Radio activity in XCF format (PEP v1.1.20) which was then zipped. The XCF contains a device used solely to store buttons which contain learned IR codes for the Polk XRt12 XM Reference Tuner. The rest of the XCF in turn references those IR code buttons as needed. As such, if you intend on opening this XCF in PEP 2 while retaining the IR codes and action lists referencing those IR codes you must first open the file in PEP v1.1.20, then saving the device containing the IR code buttons to "My Database". From there you simply need to update the action list of each IR code button to reference the same IR code from "My Database" instead. At that point you'll be able to open the XCF in PEP 2 retaining the IR codes. I don't use PEP 2 otherwise I would have taken these steps already. Of course if you are downloading the XCF for the graphics only it doesn't matter.

[Download File (1.03 MB)]
(Right click and choose "Save Target As..." if needed.)

For anyone interested in checking it out there is an updated version of my PackAndGo file available for download via the first post of this thread. Screenshots in that post have been updated throughout as well. Spent some time over the past couple days enhancing my DVD Juke activity, so that you could select a letter from the Index page without having to touch the screen. Using the directional pad/scroll wheel and OK hard button you are now able to select any given letter on-screen. Once on the DVD cover image pages you are then able to select a given DVD cover using the same method though operation via the scroll wheel can be quite eratic at times. (I far prefer using the directional pad while on the main DVD cover image pages. Moving the highlight via the directional pad is perfectly smooth and consistent unlike the scroll wheel which I'll probably just disable in this case.) Initially the highlight will not be displayed on the page. Using the directional pad/scroll wheel will then display the highlight on the page in its starting position based on the direction invoked. Pressing the Power hard button at any time will remove the highlight from the page if present. If the highlight is not present pressing the Power hard button (which I use as the Home button) will take you to my Activities page instead. Of course the entire activity can be navigated solely by touching the screen if you wish. While browsing the DVD cover image pages I also track what letter you are currently under for later recall by the Index page. For example, lets say you chose the letter "A". You are then taken to DVD cover image page, A1. Now lets say you paged from A1 all the way down to page, C4. Going back to the Index page at that point the letter "C" would be highlighted as that's the letter you had come from. In fact, I track the DVD cover image highlight as well. It's tracked independently at all three levels where used, those levels being the main DVD cover image pages, title selection and disc selection pages. This provides for an optimal experience when using the selection mechanism to navigate the interface versus tapping the screen. I should also point out that both navigation methods work in tandem as well. If a given DVD cover image is highlighted for instance, tapping a different DVD cover image on-screen will always result in the highlight moving to that position, then selecting it. If the highlight is not present on-screen this will remain to be the case until the directional pad/scroll wheel are used. So with this latest enhancement my entire DVD Juke activity can now be navigated (Pic1, Pic2, Pic 3) without having to touch the screen.

I also added one other cool enhancement. In the event a disc is selected and the particular changer still needs powered on the following prompt is displayed stating that the disc can't be loaded. You then have the opportunity to run the activity macro or continue browsing. Well prior if you chose to run the activity macro you'd always end up back on the Main Menu page. You then had to browse to the particular disc all over again. This is no longer the case however, as you are now taken back to the specific disc confirmation page you had come from once the activity macro finishes running. This allows you to simply select the disc a second time at that point which on the second attempt is queued up successfully along with the rest of your system. I cover how I accomplished this in detail per the below.

*Updated on 11/29/2010*
Updated my PackAndGo file again today. Improved how I was implementing the above. To return the user back to the disc confirmation page they had come from I'm simply using the Browse Backward special action. From the time the user selects the disc to be played to the completion of the activity macro 7 page jumps occur. The first page jump takes the user to the device/page which tells them the disc can't be loaded. Choosing yes at that point and running the activity macro results in 6 loading pages being displayed making 7 page jumps total. As such, I simply added 7 Browse Backward special actions to the end of the activity macro used in this case which in effect takes the user all the way back to the disc confirmation page they had come from. Fortunately the browse backwards stack holds the last 9 pages displayed on the remote, so needing to browse backwards 7 times did not present an issue. Now here's the catch. Browsing backwards 7 times after the last of the loading pages is displayed is all well and good, but I didn't want anything graphically to change on-screen during this time. I wanted it to appear to the end user as if they were going straight from the last loading page to the disc confirmation page they had come from. I created this illusion via the use of ProntoScript of course. I simply set a global variable just prior to the activity macro being executed. Initially the value is undefined. If the value is undefined the graphics/text for each loading page is displayed as one would normally expect. Once reaching the last loading page (which is prior to the browse backward special actions taking place) I change the value of the global variable to "Backward". If the value is set to "Backward" each loading page is set to appear identical to the last loading page including the device/page containing the initial page prompt. This in turn provides the illusion to the end user that they are being taken directly from the last loading page to the disc confirmation page they had come from with no stops in between. Once back at the disc confirmation page the global variable is set back to 'undefined'. Gotta love ProntoScript! Can't say I miss the ProntoNG days. Pretty cool to browse backwards 7 times at the end of a macro sequence and have the end user be non the wiser. :-) In fact, I've since implemented the same technique for the other DVD Juke activity macros I have in place, those which can potentially be run from the Activities page and DVD Juke Menu page. In these cases however, it's simply to prevent the user from inadvertently browsing backwards from the Main Menu page to the last of the loading pages via Firm1 (set to Browse Backward) once initially taken to the activity.

I've made some significant updates to my PackAndGo file over the past few days. Really starting to get things polished with respects to my DVD Juke activity. Have updated the post prior to this one (Post 43) with lots of added info. My new and improved PackAndGo file can be downloaded via the first post of this thread for those interested in checking it out. For anyone that doesn't own a TSU9600 it's very easy to run the PackAndGo file in PEP v2's Simulator instead. Instructions for how to do so can be found here.

Feeding my addiction once again today I implemented the below. :-) My PackAndGo file has been updated accordingly of course for anyone interested in checking it out.

-The scroll wheel functionality for my DVD Juke activity can now be enabled/disabled for the Main Menu page, Index page, and main DVD cover image pages by accessing my System Status page which is shown below.

Tapping on a given value will toggle it from on to off and vice versa. By default the scroll wheel is turned off for the main DVD cover image pages. The System Status page can be accessed from any page where the system items in the upper right corner of the screen are visible. On top of these system items is an invisible button. A normal button press takes you to my Lighting activity. An extended button press takes you to the System Status page.
