I have two 9800s, both bought this year as 'new', unopened items - they work just fine.

I've just amended my xcf file to include the scroll wheel as track forwards/back on the CD, and am baffled to find that it works on one 9800 but not the other. All other functionality is fine.

I had a 9400 many years ago, and that wouldn't accept programming for the scroll wheel, so wonder if this is something that might depend on the date of manufacture. Any ideas?

Assuming that you have the same firmware on both 9800's and that you are using PEP2 or higher...

When you move the wheel slowly, you should feel/hear a small click. If you don't, that means the physical rotary switch has separated from the board and may be broken off. The 9600 Plastic scroll wheels used an optical mechanism to detect wheel movement but the metal ones use a physical switch.

'Twas old firmware - updated and sorted.

To paraphrase Marvin from The Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy, I hope it doesn't hurt having to think down to my level!

Cheers, Lyndel.

Well that's great news! I'm also happy that my post above also describes how to diagnose if a scroll wheel is physically broken. :-)
