my TSU9800 randomly seems to suffer from insomnia ;)
During normal usage, out of the blue, it happens that after the screen turns off it is activated again one or two seconds later without an apparent cause.
It then turns off after the configured timeout only to be activated again after a few seconds.
Repeat forever.

Of course, I'm not touching the remote at those times and it's lying flat on the table.
I suspected a flaky pick-up sensor first, but even turning that off does not stop the behavior.
I have not been able to intentionally reproduce it.
What usually fixes the problem is rebooting the device.

Has anyone seen this kind of behavior?
Could it be some script going haywire?

Is not likely a script. It could be wifi-drops that cause this or could be that your rotary wheel is triggering it. Is your rotary wheel sticky? Ever spill water or something on the unit?

Also, how old are the batteries?

I've had this before. It can also be one of the buttons that isn't completely released, and it can be a dirty screen. It seems that residue from fingerprints can sometimes be enough to cause it. So, check the buttons (particularly those below the screen) and give it a really good clean - might just help.

I use Zeiss lens wipes - work a treat and not hard on the unit at all.

It could be the rotary wheel - mine is indeed a little sticky.
I only use it in a single activity, but apparently rotating it wakes up the device even when the it is not configured.
Maybe it is time to disassemble and clean the remote.

I havent spilled anything on it and I replaced the batteries last year, so they should be good.

if you need a 9800 service manual and can't find one, reach out via addy on my profile. They are a little trickier to get into than the 9600. Same principal, more screws, must remove the sticker over ethernet port, and the high voltage from the screen inverter.

@Twelfth Monkey: sorry, I completely missed your post until just now.
Good point! Though I haven't noticed any stuck buttons yet, residue on the screen could very well be a factor (though I'm wiping off the unit regularly with isopropyl alcohol).
I'll watch out for that!

Meanwhile I made a page containing PS debug panel and configured the wheel to print a message when it's triggered.
The idea was to switch to this page when I notice the issue and to see if there are any events issued by the wheel when the screen activates.
Unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the case. Either it's not the wheel or it wakes up the device without triggering a "scriptable event" (rotating the wheel manually gives me the expected output, so that works).

My first TSU9600 used to wake up on its own incessently. I had it for a few years before it started doing this. It would get stuck in a loop doing this. As you described, performing a reset would break the cycle, but only for a time. My solution, lay the remote down on its face when not docked!

That being said, I was convinced the issue had something to do with the scroll wheel, specifically the original version of the scroll wheel. I’ve purchased a number of TSU9600’s since and made sure to always purchase one that had the updated scroll wheel, the same scroll wheel the TSU9400 uses. Have not encountered the issue since.
