I have searched, but can't find a thread to guide with the above. Can anyone help? Is it difficult, and are two batteries needed, as I have seen suggested? Any help greatly appreciated, battery life is steadily falling and I have to do something about.

Ah, I did find a thread by googling outside this site. Any pointers for batteries/tools, and for the location of the high voltage part to be avoided at all costs?

It's a high voltage inverter, apparently. I have the right star-screwdriver, but any pointers about where to avoid would be a help. Ditto battery, as I gather the flat ones are not right, despite being advertised as such. Do I need to remove the pads under the bottom closest to the 'aiming' end - are there screws under there too?

When you look at the back side of the TSU, with the dock connector at the bottom, the inverter sits a little above the speaker.
Remove all the screws, then just pry open the back cover.
After removing the back cover, you should have a clear view of the inverter.
IIRC there's an imprint with a lightning symbol and "1000V" (or sth. along those lines) marking it.
With a decent amount of caution, you shouldn't come close to touching this thing.
The batteries are located left and right with a connector right next to them.

OK, back off and correct parts ordered, many thanks. No singed fingers either...

Haven't changed them yet as this all set me off in the direction of eBay again. Put a cheekily low bid of £300 on a pretty much mint 9800 which arrived this morning, and was as described. Very happy bunny.

Just order 2 TSU9600 batteries from Ebay. They should run you maybe $15USD per battery.

I would recommend you not buy the 3000mah battery but instead by the 2200mah battery as that is what was in the remote to begin with.

Not sure of any charging specs/changes that might be required for the 3000mah battery.
