I'm trying to talk to a Sirius tuner (SCH2P) using rs232, but need to control it using 2 different control systems (Pronto & NetStreams). I realize a simple Y-cable won't work, and did some forum searching on here to get some ideas.

The two devices some people mentioned are the XOVP14 Expansion Module from Xantech and the 9PMDS splitter from B&B Electronics. Both of these posts were made over a year ago, though.

Are there any newer products on the market? Or do you all still use these two products, and are they reliable? Thanks for any insight you could give me.

Can't you connect the tuner to the Netstream and then have the Pronto talk to the Netstreams subsystem over IP - would require Netstream to have an open Protocol.

I am doing something very similar where I have my projector connected to a CBUS network and issue commands to that which are translated on the CBUS layer.

Good call, I have successfully issued commands over NetStreams over IP in the past and might be able to do so again (it's been a while). Viable option, I'd just rather not have my control system rely on my distributed audio system for control =)

You will have MUCHO difficulty with the SCH2P as there is no good way to eliminate the retransmits that the tuner will do as you cannot respond to the tuner quick enough (< 100ms) to satisfy the lower layer protocol retransmit threshold. What this means is that you will likely get the same response packet 3 times for each request you send.

Furthermore, whenever you send using RFX9600, the incoming serial buffer is cleared. Therefore, if you had any data in the buffer (asynchronous events or the other 2 copies of the response packet), you mayl find data is gone or corrupt in cases where you cleared only a partial packet.r.

I worked with Sirius early on as they asked me to write a module for the Pronto/RFX9600. I had something working but it wass nowhere near robust enough (meaning that there is too much room for errors to warrant a stable/reliable/performant module) and finally threw in the towel after discussions with Belgium and Sirius. I am waiting for the new controller to try again.

My suggestion, put the SCH2P behind Netstreams or a Sirius-Ready receiver.

Wow, never thought controlling this thing directly would be such a pain. I understand everything about your response except when you say 'Sirius-ready receiver'.. What exactly does this mean? I guess a better question would be what's the difference between the SCH2P and a Sirius-ready receiver? I thought since I activated this particular receiver and it receives a signal directly then it would be Sirius-ready?

Thanks for the helpful advice thus far and for clearing this up for me.

For example, the SCH2P plugs in with the 8-pin cable to the back of my Denon 4810CI. The receiver has logic built-in to communicate with the controller and will then display output onscreen. You then connect audio of the SCH2P to the receiver input of your choice.
