I’m looking for light modules that Pronto can both control and read back the status of, e.g. current light level. I do have a dedicated PC that my Pronto interfaces with, so if it’s necessary to involve the PC in the solution, this is OK. I’ve already written my own media service on my XP64 and accessible by my Pronto 9600 so I’m familiar with socket connections etc.

What are your recommendations?

I would expect that if you know prontoscript, you can integrate any lighting system?

Correct, but I figure before I order hardware I'd like to hear from others that might be willing to share their thoughts.

I have a Mode Lighting system for the whole house. Using RFX9600 via RS232 was very easy. I have no 2-way control as I do not know how to do things like that, but the system has been working almost 2 years now, without any problems.

For cost and flexibility i would go cbus, but it depends how many loads/circuit you want to control.

I would suggest a HAI Omni Pro II system. Their HLC lighting is completely retro-fittable as long as their is a neutral wire in the switch locations. The system is fairly inexpensive and can easily be controlled by a Pronto.

I've done some development with PEP2 in the last time, and I think this may be interesting for some of you, especially in Europe.

I've finished some software standard for bi-directional IP communication with the KNX bus.
This bus system is "the world's only open STANDARD for home and building control" (KNX slogan ;-)
In the meantime more than 150 companies joined to the KNX association - like ABB, Siemens, Schneider...

The software I was working on is using an IP-KNX Gateway. This means you don't have to invest into an extender.

There is a nice module called "KNX IP BAOS 770", see [Link: weinzierl.de].

This is an object server that works directly on the Application Layer - which means, the registers you write or read on can be assigned directly in the ETS Software to group addresses.

I have no problem to share the basic software, which may be used for lighting control.

Just to build on the raised question, is Pronto capable of bi-directional communication? If I am controlling the lights my bedroom, can I program Pronto such that it will popup a message on Pronto to tell me if one of the bulbs is faulty?

In another case, will Pronto be able to get the light levels from the bulbs?

There are two way scripts written for the Pronto's for lighting, Dynalite, Clipsal, Lutron etc , but im not sure if any off them can tell you is a lamps is Blown,

If its just one room wont you see if the lamp has blown?

To Detect remotly if a lamp is blown , you would need to to Current measurement on each circuit of lighting.. more hardware and more Pronto script to be written , if you have deep pockets it can be done :)

Your choice will depend partly on what country you live in & what hardware/system is easily available and supported in your region.

I live in Singapore.. hmm.. I am still using the typical lighting.. and oh.. is pronto also able to PING the devices around?

You cannot execute ProntoScript while your Pronto is asleep. So the only way to determine the status of the lighting is to check it when it is awake. The simplest [only?] way would be to add a button that checks things only when the button gets pushed.

[This assumes the bi-directional functionality you are after is possible.]

yup.. the checking will only be done when a button is pushed.. i have no problems with that.. but I am not sure if bi directional communication is possible on Pronto
