Hi all, I've had my Philips Pronto 9400 remote for many years now. I've customised it for all my equipment and it is using RF to send to my devices hidden away in a cupboard.
The Philips is great BUT I want something smaller and more manageable and more future friendly.
Is the Logitech Harmony Ultimate able to do what the Pronto does? I don't use any scripting features, just sequencing and timing controls.
I like the smaller remote size and the fact that it can be used with an iPhone and also the fact that Logitech exist and the Philips Pronto division no longer does!
Any comments or advice would be much appreciated!
Thanks,
Gareth.

[Link: ikonavs.co.nz]

I have been using the 9400 to control my complex 4 room system for years now and just tried the Harmony Ultimate (for the past two days) to use as a second remote to leave in one of the upstairs rooms.

After two days of total annoyance with it's dumbed down and inflexible setup, I have UPS picking the stupid POS Harmony up this afternoon to return to Amazon. Comparing the Harmony to the Pronto is like comparing a tablet to a PC. The tablet is more modern, it works for basic tasks, but it hard to use for anything the least bit sophisticated or complex.

I also went on eBay this morning and ordered another used 9400 as a backup since research here and elsewhere has convinced me that one has three choices these days for complex AV setups:

1) Use something dumbed down like the Harmony or tablet/phone apps
2) Buy from a high end dealer and pay thru the nose every time you need a minor change done
3) Buy a used Pronto

For me, option one is too limiting and annoying, option two is not only against my principals it is totally impractical as we live hours from the nearest dealer/installer. That leaves option three.

They will have to pry the Pronto out of one hand while they pry the gun out of my other! There is literally nothing like it at this time.

Thanks CCDGuy, you've saved me a world of pain that I suspected might be the case! I'm about to do the same and purchase a backup TSU9400!

Glad to help! I am also going to be looking at iRule and the iTach with a tablet/phone over the next few years or so. I do suspect that in the long run not only will the Pronto become less viable and available but IR command in general will be gradually replaced by network attached and controlled devices. I am sure IR will still be on most devices but more as a legacy/basic control. For more sophisticated control, stuff seems to be going to the network. A great example is my Yamaha 2040 that I just got to replace my old Marantz 8001 that died. It has really nice smartphone/tablet control.....

My plan is to have a few Prontos so that I can use those for the next 3-5 years. I figure by that time all my devices will be network capable (about half are already) and I can retire the Prontos for a tablet control system.
