I was wondering if a PC remote control can turn on and off the computer? In the same way a TV remote can turn on and off the tv.

Thanks for any info you can give me on this subject.

"Off", yes, but so far "on" seems to be a no.

With that said, there are some HTPC cases you can buy that ship with an iMON remote by default, which also have a special add-on circuit that enables the remote to power the PC on.

Have a look at IRTrans (www.irtrans.com).
It allows to switch a PC on and off.

I remember reading an tutorial on how to use a cordless doorbell to turn your computer on, I cant remember the site though.

The problem with turning a computer on is there needs to be a voltage present and therefore cannot be done with software like a shutdown.

Might be worth checking out the link above from IRTrans as it seems the perfect solution, other than modifying a cordless doorbell and having your computer turn on every time someone's at your door!

the doorbell has been done on the Xbox and there is a kit called XIR remote that turns on & off the Xbox using the DVD remote - modding is required.

Does anyone know if the iMon remote can be programmed into the MX500? And would the MX500 support the mouse function somewhat?

I just recently bought the Imon inside version and after purchasing found out that it can be hooked up to the power button and turn on the computer. I haven't tried it yet though. Plus it was difficult to find the inside version. When I install it I will let you know how it works

Many newer computers have a feature called "Wake on LAN" that allows another device on the network to turn that computer on remotely. It's intended to allow network administrators to do upgrades and backups at night.

The IRA-3 is an inexpensive device that lets you do this via an infrared remote. I haven't used this myself, but have considered it.

thanks for the info Craig. with the Imon inside with power On/Off feature, it takes away the debate whether it's worth double the regular unit.

let me know if you get the remote On/Off to work.....
