I've decided to update/expand the topic of this forum from plain PC remote controls (which have essentially become non-issues as almost all HTPCs sold these days include built-in CIR that will work with any universal remote), to something a little broader that covers all HTPC and Media Server topics.
If you have any questions in this regard please do ask here - I have several HTPC systems at home, as well as a dedicated media server that serves music, photos and HD videos.
