In the name of conserving as much energy as possible - (while still maximizing entertainment :) - I've got my HTPC set up so that it hibernates when it hasn't been used for a couple of hours & there are no scheduled recordings. I was looking for an easy way to kick the system back on with my Dish remote because I control all of the functions through the VCR mode (and a couple of other unused buttons) of a standard Dish remote and WinLIRC. This little item did the trick:

Basically you hook this thing up and it will learn any button of your IR remote that you want it to recognize as the on off button for the system.

(Not sure why they dont mention hibernation but I guess they figure a switch is a switch.)
