The Xsi is a great camera, and a nice way to enter the DSLR world.

The price on it is great, and just keep one thing in mind when you go to the DSLR level, put your money in to the lenses, not the bodies...

You are going to have a blast with this type of camera, the Live View is great if you are used to looking at the LCD to frame your shots, and the custom modes (M, Av, Tv) will keep you busy for months...

I say go for it, unless you need HD Video, then I would look at the T1i, which does very smooth 720p video and somewhat choppy 1080p (at 20fps, which is strange).

Good luck, and if you ever have any questions, shoot me an email and I'd love to help.

LOL.... I was chasing my tail for a year thinking the same thing before I pulled the trigger on my last body.

You probably don't need it (yet), I'm sure you could afford it, and something better will always show up.

I needed it and purchased the 7D the day it came out. I am truly happy I waited a year for that camera to come out, I have all my daughters "firsts" in 1080p, first bath, first tooth, etc...

I used to own a Canon HD camcorder, and a DSLR with video is different. Mainly, no auto-focus. You will have to manually adjust the focusing to have quick and fluid results. The basic auto-focus the DSLR's offer are really just for the initial focus point, after that, you are on your own.

The DSLR will not replace the camcorder at this time, but with practice, you can do things with a DSLR that you could never do with a camcorder.

Check out Vimeo.com and search for T1i/7D/5D2 1080p video, you will be amazed at what people are doing with the video.

I'm probably not making this any easier for you, LOL....

I finally ordered the Canon EOS Rebel XSI camera last night. I kept putting it off because i kept telling myself i should save the money. Or i should wait and see if i can buy the more expensive model. That went on for over a week :).

I got it with the 18-55 lens from Dell. Im going to order the better lens once i learn more about the camera. By then i will know if its time to upgrade or stick with what i have.

This site has a ton of information. My goal is to be able to take and edit photos and end up with what he has here : [Link: secondpicture.com]

Awesome! Congrats on your purchase, I am sure you will love it!

Just don't get overwhelmed, it takes some time to learn the custom modes, but it is worth it in the long run! I probably took about 3000 pictures my first weekend with my 1st DSLR, i also deleted about 3000!

Can't wait to see some of what you come up with...

Also, now that you are a Canon family member, I will share with you the one resource that has helped me the most along my journey. I suggest you take a look and create an account, some of the best photographers in the world visit there often. They also have a kick-ass marketplace, I have bought some amazing stuff from there.

Today I was playing around with my new 100mm f2.8L IS USM macro lens for the first time... OMG is this thing incredibly SHARP! The detail level in things is absolutely astounding.

I'm a bit jealous actually, I've had my eye on that lens since it came out... I own the original 2.8 and that is pretty sharp, I could only imagine the L/IS version.

Any samples?

Nothing I'm particularly proud of yet. It's freezing outside, so I've been stuck in the house shooting in low light... got some nice ISO 1600/2000 shots of the cat that I'm sure don't do it justice. :-)

It's also got one massive lens hood - makes it look like a 400mm zoom or something. :-)

Camera showed up today. One thing that struck me as odd is that there was no protective film over the display. Everything shiny comes with protective film these days. There are no scuffs or scratches on th ebody or display. The camera is packed in a way that you could open it up, use it, repack it and send it back without ever cutting tape. I have the battery charging right now. Hopefully its not DOA or buggy (reason for return).

It came with a "solutions disk". Is there any point to installing this? I try to avoid installing peripheral software and opt for just drivers when i can get away with it. I noticed "PhotoStitch 3.1" and thought it might be important. Are you using any of this software or just photoshop?

Thanks

I installed the entire disc, and then the updates from Canon's site (some require a pre-existing version to be installed). I reality all I've used so far is EOS Utility (communicates with the camera and does tethered shooting) and DPP (raw processing).

There's also some management software I don't know if I'll ever be using (ZoomBrowser EX), Photostitch (which I'm sure I'll want to try at some point), picture profile editing stuff, some movie editing stuff, plus a bunch of "CameraWindow" utils that don't actually work with my model.

Definitely install the EOS utility & DPP. And as Daniel mentioned, get the updates, which can be found at Canon's website very easily.

Even though I use Photoshop & Lightroom for RAW editing, I find that DPP is easier for batch conversion of RAW to JPEG.

The photostich program is cool, but Photoshops "Photomerge" plugin is much better in my opinion, which both are used for panoramics both horizontal and vertical.

From the looks of that photo (I can't see the EXIF data at my work machine right now) it looks awfully sharp, which is a good thing. The Xsi is known for having great images in the 100-1600 ISO range.

Also, having Wine, wire strippers, graph paper & sharpies is always a good start to a great night!

And Daniel, i'm not sure if you know this, but the Movie files our cameras create (.MOV) are somewhat choppy during playback with Quicktime (for me at least), and Zoombrowser plays those files much better than Quicktime does, so that is the only reason I use Zoombrowser.

Glad you got it up and running Stamp, have lots of fun.

Oh, by the way, i'm almost ready to shoot the images of my daughter wearing the Wiremonkey onesie, she turns 6 months old this month, so it should fit her soon!

Quicktime on Windows has an almost complete lack of performance on any sort of demanding file... there's a lot of stuff it struggles with that other software plays just fine.
