I'm curious if there's anyone else here with pinball as a hobby.

As someone who spends his entire day on a computer, I have an appreciation for REAL things when I'm not in front of said computer - physical things I can get my hands on.

Which is why pinball is one of the things that I like to do in my relatively sparse free time - a steel ball, bashing around real wood, plastic, rubber and metal, in generally unpredictable ways that has never been correctly replicated by simulators.

And yes, pinballs are still made today - although just barely...

MAME is my game. I put together an autorun mini CD that i can carry with me and pop into any PC and play all the classic video games. I have been telling myself i will build a mame cabinet for years but i never seem to get around to it.

I also love pinball, although I only see one machine around now and then.

One customer had build a nice gameroom and has a killer mint condition "Theatre of Magic" machine, I always play a game or two when I stop by after a service call.

On a side note, he also has an old school "Skee Ball" with two lanes and the original wooden balls.

joey: that's why I ended up having to buy my machines - ever since the one arcade in the mall closed in the 90's, there has been absolutely nowhere to play pinball close by.

djy: no, never added myself... mine is a first run from 2003 (bought it new).

I love pinball! Drove 80 miles just to play Monopoly when Stern first released it. I personally maintain my Dad's Corvette and my Father-in-laws Addams Family machines. I would have a couple of my own if I had the space. I used to spend a couple of hours every single night playing Addam's Family. I had the timing down so well that I could make a single game last for more than an hour. I live 3 hours away from both now... I miss those days.

Daniel,

I have two machines...

The first I purchased was a Williams "Black Knight" Limited Edition. I bought it because I pushed many quarters into it, after having spent many a long night of studying in the student union. It brings back memories!

My second is another Williams pinball, "The Getaway: High Speed II" (Second Revision, which has the Diamond Plate playfield.)

I'm a Electrical Engineer, so they appeal to me, as they are electronics that I can actually work on and fix, without needing a stereo microscope, and tweezers to handle the components. I enjoy playing them, fixing them up, and the occasional bit of modification to fix issues with their designs.

The Texas Pinball Festival here in Dallas is always a lot of fun. A chance to play lots of pinball machines. Last time I saw a Williams Joust Pinball machine (not the arcade game, the pinball machine, production run of only 402), which is incredibly unique, in that you can play head to head against another player. The festival always has lots of machines up for sale as well, and lots of vendors selling parts. I notice they don't have much info up yet on their website, but here's the link: http://www.texaspinball.com/

If you should decide to come for the pinball festival, give me a heads up. With all the enjoyment and info I've gained from your site, seems like I owe you a nice steak, beer, and to play some pinball.

Thanks for the offer!

The machine that got me into this was "Cyclone". I remember a family vacation when I was 12 at Disney World, and there was a pinball machine in the Caribbean Beach hotel arcade room that I played a TON of at night - got good at it too, free games etc. Seemed a lot of fun.

Flash forward 13 years later, and the only thing I could remember about that machine was that it was a carnival, fair or circus theme and said the phrases "Step right up" and "Ride the ferris wheel". And of course it had to have existed as of that trip. Eventually pinned it down as Cyclone, but ended up buying The Simpsons Pinball Party instead.

Daniel,

I've never played Cyclone. I took a look at the machine at IPMD, and it looks like a fun game.

Have you played many different machines? What is your favorite?

I really like Theatre of Magic, and that will likely be my next purchase... But, the Williams Joust Pinball is so unique, if I ever see one, I'll likely buy it as long as most of the playfield parts are present.

Today, Cyclone is a bit dull... but when I was 12 it was amazing. I may still want one someday, simply for nostalgia (speaking of which, I still have an ancient computer complete with a Roland MT-32 for playing old LucasArts and Sierra adventure games).

I've played practically everything via emulation, however I never get to play the real things as there are NONE to play around me. Literally zero. The only chance I get to play is when on vacation, or when I go to the local Stern distributor to see what's new.

I have a rather long list of "favorites" I've come up with over hours and hours of emulator play... and if I ever get to one of the pinball shows it might be very difficult to not leave with SOMETHING.

I identify with that statement. That's how I ended up with my second Pinball Machine. My wife jokes that she knew I was buying a second machine, the moment we discussed me going to a pinball show! She's a smart woman... She married me anyway.

I had a friend with a few machines as well as a few stand up games.
He had funhouse and some other one and his stand ups were crystal castles, centipede, donky kong, and had a sit down glass top ms pacman table game

Many a friday nights there after the weekly pizza night, beer on tap and snaks galore

I always wanted a pinball machine, but never had room for one, still dont.

Our UPG guy has quite the collectio he says...16-18 machines, Im thinking I need to go check them all out now

Got our first machine (terminator 3) a few months ago. Decided to add pinball as one of our bar amenities so I am currently hauling a Fish Tales, Demolition Man and Johnny Mnemonic in a trailer back home after 10 hours of driving to pick them all up. Only 1.5 hours to go.
