Hi,
I currently have an URC MX-880 and looking to get a new remote for backup. I also have the URC software with dealer login but don’t know know how to program from scratch. I can make small changes.
I am trying to find the best replacement remote. I was looking at the MX-990 but trying to find a dealer or someone that I can hire to program it remotely if I provide the file from current remote. Or if there is a better option remote since it’s hard to find new MX-880.
Any help suggestions would be great.

You can’t port the 880 file to the 990.  You will have to start from scratch.

We have been purchasing, refurbishing and selling MX-880 Remotes for years. We actually prefer them to a lot of newer remotes as they have hard buttons without carbon pads (That wear out). They have sealed metal pads that last a lot longer, almost indefinately. The coating on the backs also can get very sticky and needs to be replaced, that is a very time-consuming task that a lot of folks cannot be bothered with. They are also one of the easiest remotes to program.

MX-890s have a similar construction but do not feel as nice in the hand and have an inferior less reliable display.

I would buy a used one that has a serial number post 009xxxxx. 0011xxxxx and 0012xxxxx were the last serials made. Earlier ones tend to be beaten up. Do not touch any that are Pre-008xxxx as they have different electronics, you can tell these ones by the Reset Button accessible from the battery compartment. Batteries will have 14xx to 16xx date codes if they have originals. Although good clean ones are Very hard to find and tend to fetch a premium. Still worth it IOHO.

Never cared for the charging arrangement.  Like the MX890 much more.

There is a custom charger for the MX-880. I have one and it works great. Unfortunately, I cannot post photos on this site. If you message me your email I will send you some pics.

The 880 is one of the easiest to program too.

shokwaverider,

where are the serial numbers located? I have a few mx-880's - one of which just failed (LCD screen is scrambled). So I'm gonna be looking on ebay for a replacement with serial numbers you suggested.

The barcode in the battery box has numbers under it but look nothing like what you posted.

Thanks!

It is the second set of numbers under the barcode.

Here is an Example: 1B731212 0127005

0127005 is the serial number.

You will be VERY lucky to find one on eBay without a sticky scratched back, as well as a scratched screen. Ask me how I know. :)

The MX-890 was always very reliable, and never had any screen issues with it.  It is just as easy to program as the 880 as well as offered more advanced programming options.  I get you like the 880, and nothing wrong with that, as most people settle in with a favorite, but in just about every respect, I find the 890 to be superior and a decent upgrade over the 880.  I also think ergonomically it feels much better in the hand as well.  The 880 was a fine remote in its day, and still a good remote, but I believe the 890 is just better.

I must disagree with the MX-890 vs 880 comments. We get at least a ratio of 5:1 with 890 screens going bad vs 880 screens, and they are a lot duller fading over time than the 880 screens overall.

Typically, problems with 880s can be repaired (Not the Screen) vs 890s. This is from our 10 years' experience repairing and refurbishing URC Hard button remotes. Based on this we do prefer the 880 from this perspective. But we know each to his or her own and respect everyone's preferences.

Alas these days nice used ones are hard to find.

Unless you have a special attachment to 880’s (Shok I get it) there is no reason not to use an 890.

Screen problems on an 890? Haven’t seen one yet. I would gamble on an 890 outlasting an 880 that is 5 or 10 years older.

The 880 graphics are not as nice, the charging pin gets loose or breaks off (no, I don’t want to modify or repair a 5-10 year old remote), and I like the programming better on the 890. Only thumbs down is the download time on the 890.

tomciara -

You are correct it is preference. We do not see the issues with the charge port as we have our own 880 charging stand that we give our customers with each refurbished 880 we provide. We also offer it as an accessory.

For those with charge port issues it is very easy to replace the port. I have probably only seen a handful that needed replacement though and we have a lot of spare ports. The 890 charger stand is definitely better though.

We do find the 880 easier to work on and refurbish that the 890, but again that is our experience. I think we are a little biased as you suggest towards the 880, 10 years of maintaining and refurbishing URC remotes will do that to you.
