The CCP software on the XP laptop gets a failure when trying to connect for an update. But, the Win7 CCP connects just fine. So, I copied the software from the Win7 box to the XP laptop. Still won't connect to update.

The laptop's internet connection is just fine, since using a browser to download an internet website works just fine.

Does anyone know what IP address the program is trying to get to and what protocol is it using (http, ftp, or whatever)?

I never could get my XP laptop to even connect to the internet outside of CCP. Tried multiple things to get it to work. So had to get another laptop and put Windows 10 on it. It was a fairly cheap used one and is VERY slow. But CCP and MX Editor is all I run on it so it's ok.

The laptop, with XP-SP3, has no problem using the ethernet connection to cennect with my internal LAN and the WAN. It is only when CCP tries to update that it fails. It used to work.

Make sure that you have the DNS set correctly and are not using a web proxy. Try setting the DNS to 8.8.8.8 which is Google's server. If all else fails, install Wireshark on the machine and see if CCP is trying to "phone home".

As noted in the original post, all internet operations work, i.e., I can point a web browser to any website on the net and access systems I have set up on my LAN via samba. I point the DNS lookup to my router. I don't use web proxies, or proxies of any kind.

Yep, thinking about installing wireshark, but was hoping that someone here knows the IP address that it is looking for, or if it is using a URL, what it is.
