Even though I got the username/login info, I never upgraded my ccp. I re-installed the original ccp but it would not work with my latest ccp programmed file. So, I uploaded the program from remote to the old ccp software and everything works just fine.

You can log in to the URC portal and download a CCP version from early 2020, as noted earlier in this thread. Maybe it will be newer than the version you installed? At least keep it for insurance. I grabbed the file, but did not need to install it since my last update was on July 10.

The only problem I can see with keeping our pre-July 12 versions is that some future Windows update could cause old CCP to fail and require a newer version.

I do have the new version on an old computer. I have nothing against using it if I can determine that URC will not hurt us somewhere down the line. We'll see what happens and what we learn over the next four months during the URC registration period.

Clicking the link provided earlier now just brings up:

“Please use the Email Verification box to see if you currently have access to URC CCP software.”

OK so did you register with URC ?

The email verification box is to verify if you have registered

If you enter the email address you used to register you get this message:

"You are approved for future access to CCP! Your Login credentials have been sent to the email you entered. Please make sure to check your SPAM folder!"

If you've not registered and the email is unknown to URC,

then you're asked to register including name, phone number, a serial number from a remote and tick the terms and conditions shown.

I just followed the instructions on blocking CCP components in the firewall.

It worked to block server connection. Thanks! Great suggestion.

I did a live update yesterday & got the message that soon you'll need the portal login. I called tech support to clarify what's going on and admit I unloaded on the person. They also couldn't tell me how this would work or when it will be required. Not great help.

So I registered, got a password but what comes next isn't clear. That's when I decided to do the firewall block for now just in case they reneg on the access issue. I don't trust this company anymore. Even after logging into the portal, I'm still not sure how this impacts my current installation on laptop, if it does at all. The intended process is clear as mud. I do see where I can download CCP now, manuals etc. But the version that is downloaded is older than the version that's on my PC so I'm confused.

I have even older versions of the software backed up to NAS. I'm unsure what downloading a 3.9.xx version is supposed to accomplish when the latest is 4.11.xx?

I've probably spent close to $4K+ over the years on their products for personal use, all from legit dealers and before I bought a MX6000, I got my 1st copy of CCP from URC themselves, for FREE! They were handing out FREE discs at 2010-2011 CEDIA. So if they were willing to give it away 10 yrs ago AND let their dealers decide to provide the software to end users, WTF are they trying to accomplish now? Seems like all they will accomplish is make current end users angry.

While I like their products, I think URC as a company leaves a lot to be desired. They really don't act in a consistent manner to dealers & certainly not end users. I've been tempted to sell all my gear out and go Control4. The only thing that prevents me from doing that is I can do all my programming myself with URC.

The other thing that bugs me is URC doesn't keep the products around long. I had the MX6000 only several years and it was discontinued, same with the MSC400, along with all that Lutron lighting gear they promoted. Really smart to orphan people investing in a URC ecosystem, builds great long-term clients to keep coming out with things then abandoning them. Sheesh.

URC really can't seem to figure out their market, what sandbox to play in or how to build customer loyalty.

I can say with near 100% certainty that I will not buy any of their products again. When my gear ever decides to quit or I have problems accessing CCP, then I will make that change.

I'm not saying that I like the situation, but "free support forever" is a difficult business model and switching from free to support for a fee is not popular with users or dealers. From a business model perspective, market share for the older units is shrinking and since the manufacturers' support costs are relatively fixed, support fees per incident should be increasing. For customers that need it, Microsoft is charging fees for obsolete operating system support.

It's not just URC that is wrestling with this. Older application versions will not always run on modern operating systems. If this is your situation, you could install an older operating system in a virtual machine and run the old software, but this would not give access to modern models and features that are not programmable using the older software.

Apple is rather blunt about this. Unless a developer's App uses current API's, it will be dropped from the App Store and some of these current API's will not run on older pads/phones. While this is very annoying to lots of folks, Apple's viability as a company is not tanking.

I have always liked URC mostly because of the support that Mike of Surf Remote gave me. He will be missed. I went thru the ordeal that URC wanted. After entering the portal I downloaded the CCP software and when I tried to install it I got an error and the installation aborted, so I reverted back to what I had.

This may become a mute issue for me. When I went to shop for a new TV, mostly from RTings ratings, not one had IR control. They all used Bluetooth. I sent a message to URC tech support and asked if they intend to support Bluetooh in their upcoming complete control lineup. They responded and said that they have no intention to support Bluetooth. As more and more stuff goes the way of Bluetooth and RF, that will knock out URC for me.

Got the Sofabaton U1 and it worked. Their upcoming X1 may be the one to get.

Except for trying to learn RS232, what are some of your recommendations.

That is not true.
A lot of TVs come with Bluetooth remotes these days but they ALL still have IR control as well.

Unfortunately the screen on the Sofabaton is a let down. My favorite URC remote is the 880. Bright, Fast, easy to program and enough for most Multi Media households. There is a brisk used market too.

790 is our next favorite. But prefer the 880 over it.

I looked into the sofabaton once.  The thing that wasnt clear to me was can you run multiple remotes with the same base station?  The X1 looks pretty promising.

I updated my CCP a few hours ago and was surprised about the notification about needing a login in the future. Needless to say, I hadn't updated in quite a while, since I didn't need to do any updates to the remote. So, I managed to miss having to go thru all of the crap some of you did.

I then came here and saw this thread and read all of the pages. I went to the portal to register. It said that it didn't recognize the MX-980 remote serial number. But, the site said that it was giving me credentials anyway. Seconds later the e-mail arrived. No idea why the serial number was unknown.

Not according the the research I have done so far. Samsung & LG (Goldstar) seem to have only RF remotes. Only the lower end names (Vizio, Hisense, TCL for example) seem to still use IR.
Years from now, you might as well kiss recording OTA TV goodbye thanks to ATSC 3

The Samsung and LG TVs that I have dealt with might only come with an RF remote but the TVs themselves still have IR sensors and still respond to IR codes from other remotes. Just did a brand new LG OLED yesterday and it responded to the old Spectrum-Charter remote that is IR only. YMMV.

Disagree.

I've not seen a single Samsung QLED that is RF only. I occasionally see LG and Sony, and no indications that IR has disappeared.
There is no truth anymore. Only assertions. The internet world has no interest in truth, only vindication for preconceived assumptions.

It doesn't matter what the remote that comes with the TV is. It could be powered my neural implants in your brain next year.

The TV "ITSELF" has IR control builtin and can be controlled by an IR remote of some sort. This is true for 100% of all the TVs made in the world right now! Or ever has been - at least since the 1980s.

There is not a single TV in the world that I'm aware of (and I'm pretty aware), that is controlled by RF only and has no IR sensor on it for additional IR control.

[edit]: Now in the future, to save a few pennies off the cost, it would not surprise me to see dumb manufacture start to remove those IR sensors. Leaving only control from the factory RF remote and IP control thru the network. But fortunately we are not there yet.
