I have a client with several different setups in the house. Most are a Spectrum cable box and a TV; half include a DVD Player; and there's a home theater.

The previous A/V guy was let go because he could not come up with the concept "make all remotes operate similarly." He's got cable remotes, one MX-850, and a Logitech in the home theater (that the client can't figure out how to operate).

Client also has told me "don't do something stupid to save us a hundred or so bucks."

So... I'm looking at the MX-450 anyway, based on recommendation of a tech guy at URC. I've never programmed one, but I've programmed URC, RTI, Pronto, Marantz, etc for almost twenty years.

Some locations will benefit from control via RF.

Based on what I've described, might the MX-450 be a good idea? A horrible idea?

I'm going to see what I can absorb from this, too: [Link: remotecentral.com]

Thanks!
A good answer is easier with a clear question giving the make and model of everything.

I have an MX-450 but i don't like the ergonomics very much and rarely use it anymore (it's in a spare room).

I much prefer the feel and ergonomics of the MX-780 / MX780i or even better, the MX-890 models. (i have a few of each around the house). These feel more natural in the hand and i operate them by feel.

Most importantly of all, the 450 programs through the remote - N/G.

You already asked this in another thread, and I already recommended an MX990.

the MX450 is a great remote for dealers that enjoy giving away free labor or ones that don't own a laptop.

I mean how else could you sell it compared to an MX780 that programs in a fraction of the time?  Are you charging an appropriate amount of labor to program MX450s, when the MX780 is only 50 dollars more?  You would have to basically give away the extra time spent programming the 450 in order for it to be a good deal.

If you are going to sell a URC remote, it should be at least an MX780.

I have to say, then, that URC has their heads stuck somewhere in their nether regions. The evaluation of the 450 so far is spot on.

The completely hateable thing is that if you look for info on these remotes IN THE CONTROL ROOM, you won't find this same evaluation. Not being able to program on a laptop is touted as an advantage in the Control Room!

Many dealers do not provide all of their installers with laptops, thus making in-home remote control programming by a PC equipped programmer a bottleneck to production.

I read this as "if there aren't enough PCs, just use the 450."

As a result, dealers utilize remotes that program stand- alone, without a PC.

Sounding just peachy.

Installers forced to setup these standalone programming remotes are often frustrated in any attempt to make the remote automate the system using macros.

Ok, so it's hard to do macros. That doesn't mean the 450 is at all difficult to program.

You have programmed remotes with a laptop for years. You asked us if the MX 450 would be a bad idea. We told you it would be a bad idea and gave you reasons. You seem determined to do it anyway. Why did you bother asking?

That can be said about everything he asks.  There is a theme to his posts, as if he is following a script.  Ask, refute, do what he wants anyway.  Rinse, repeat

I WAS trying to point out something. URC's description of the product, in the control room that's supposed to be for installers, finds a way to describe the MX-450 in positive terms, though as everyone here says, it's got real problems.

You'd think that if you have to be a dealer to look at the Control Room, they'd tell you the truth about the product!

You seem to have read Post 6 as though I'm scolding you guys for not liking the 450. Read it again and see if it even slightly gets across my point, that URC did this, and that, and the other, promoting a remote that is truly a pain in the ass.
