I'm having problems with the play and pause buttons. the select/play/pause IR code for apple 3 or apple 4 doesnt work.

any suggestions?

Use the Learn from Remote option in the AppleTV.

In the URC file, drag codes in from a DVD player, such as Sony.   Then teach those codes to the AppleTV from the remote menu in the appletv.   This opens up additional commands such as discrete play/pause/stop/rew/fwd/skip fwd/skip back.

Why not just use the appletv 4 (learn codes) or whatever it's called codeset? Then just learn all the commands into the AppleTV.
