The address is different frequencies so you can control different receivers simultaneously without changing another receiver.

I think you are referring to RF. The IR address he is asking about is a different codeset. I don't deal with Dish all that often, but I believe they have multiple codesets for their boxes. So, in order to control the box, you have to make sure both the box and your remote are set to the same IR codeset.

Isn't the frequency separation just an RF issue?

OK, so I'll try setting up the MX-900 using the various ID 2-9 instead of the VIP722 I've been using.

Thanks.

Dish receivers can do both RF and IR at the same time.

So I don't have to switch the Dish 21.1 IR/UHF to IR to solve my problem? IOW, is it possible for the 21.1 remote set to IR/UHF to control the Dish box AND have the MX also able to control it through IR?

If so, why did the MX-900 stop working when I registered the 21.1?

I appreciate you help.

If you look at the sys info screen it will tell you what address it is on. When you register a new remote, if it is on a different add., it change it on the receiver.

It doesnt matter if it is RF or IR the remote add. changes for both.

The receiver probably needs to be set on 1.

Push menu two times. I will bring up the system info screen.

On the dish remote, push and hold sat button until all light light up.

Push 1 then #.

Push record, it will change the add to 1.

Confirming Remote Control Operation
1 Make sure the remote has fresh batteries and is in SAT mode.
2 Press SYSTEM INFO on the receiver front panel to display the system information screen.
3 Press RECORD on the remote control:
• The Remote Address in the system information screen changes to match the address
preset in your remote control.
4 Press POWER on the remote control to turn on/off receiver.

Changing the Remote Control from UHF Pro to IR

Your receiver accepts both UHF and IR (Infrared) commands. The remote control only
outputs UHF Pro signals but can be changed to transmit IR commands by switching the
key at the bottom. This is also useful for programming an after-market universal learning
remote control to operate your receiver. Note that when the remote control is in IR mode,
you will need to use it from the same room to operate the receiver because IR signals do
not travel through walls or over great distances.

Thanks, Steve. I know about the infor screen and how to change the address. What I've noticed is when I register the original 5.3 IR remote (which still works for some buttons) it sets the address to 1. When I register the new 21.1 IR/UHF remote it sets the address to 3. The difference is when it's set to 1 my MX-900 works, while when set to 3 my MX-900 doesn't work. That's what I'm trying to fix.

I do know how to set the address of the box to anything I want, but don't know what address, if any, will allow BOTH the 21.1 and the MX-900 to work.

I'm now thinking the answer may be to select a different codeset (if that's the right term) from the IR database in MX-900 Editor. I'm now using the one called VIP 722 DVR, but that obviously is based on the 5.3 IR remote. Maybe one of the Dish Network[1] through Dish Network[8] will work. Any thoughts on this approach?

It now works! I posted the question on the Dish forum and was told "most universal remotes require the IR address to be set to 1." So, I reset the remote address on the box to 1 and now both the 21.1 and the MX-900 work.

Steve_the_Man also told me to try 1 but it didn't sink in. I didn't quite believe it because I had the mindset that I had to make the MX-900 emulate the new Dish remote, and it switches the box to 3 when registered. Hence, I thought 3 was the magic number. Also, I had tried 1 early on when I was trying to make things work in RF mode, but since the TV2 remote (which is RF) already has address 1 that address for the TV1 remote was rejected.

Anyway, the problem's solved. If anyone else wants to use both a Dish IR/UHF remote AND the MX-900 the upshot is:

1. Dish remote must be set to IR (tiny slider switch under battery cover).
2. Register the Dish remote per Dish instructions. This will set the remote address in the DVR box to 3.
3. Go through the instructions in the Dish manuals to set the remote address to 1.

Press system info. Then I think it's press and hold the sat button , press 1 for or address 1, then pound, then record. Something like that. It's in the manual but a pia to find in the manual .

This whole thing came up agine in December 2018 when the 722 again failed and had to be replaced. See the final successful outcome at my thread in January 2019. Upshot is the 21.1 remote must be set to IR with slider switch and TV1 address must be set to 1. However, if TV2 is already set to 1, as the Dish tech left it, trying to reset TV1 to 1 fails saying bot can't be set tot he same address. The work-around , strangely, is to first change TV1 to 3 (or anything but 1 or 2), then change TV1 to 1. They both show up as 1 in the System Info screen, and both remotes work perfectly.

NB: I don't have a second TV, and do not have a second Dish remote.

I'm a slow learner :-(

In my defense, I did get it working back in 2011. And I again solved the problem when the second 722 had to be replaced in December 2019. In fact, after I had discovered the magic sequence this time, I dug out my notes from 2011 and saw that I had come to the same solution then. My memory has declined in recent years, but my problem solving skills have improved to compensate :-)

BTW, am I the only one who thinks it's strange that one must first change the TV1 address to some unwanted address and then change it back to the the wanted ?address?
