Hello,
I want to convert my theater control system to RS232. I'm somewhat familiar with the programming, but as it's done on the MSC400/MX-6000 combo, is it better to have macros programmed in the MX6000 software that alias the control buttons and send those out to the MSC-400 for distribution to the components, or can/should you program RS232 command line macros directly on the MSC400? Or is that even possible? Thanks.

RS232 commands are programmed in the MSC-400. Macros containing them should also be programmed in the MSC-400.

All 232 commands get programmed in the MSC400. You will have to duplicate the components buttons on the 6000. Then you use the universal browser to drag the triggers to the macro box on each corresponding button.

You will want to program you macros in the MSC400. All the 6000 should do is send a trigger and the MSC400 will fire the macros.

Thanks. That helps. I guess my main question is this. Do you have to write multiple RS232 commands for the macros themselves, or do you write the commands for each button individually and then record the macro in the software by just aliasing the buttons? I hope my question is coming across correctly.

You have to create a device, then write commands for each button. Then on the device in the tree view, right click, tools, convert to smart macro group. You drag each macro "button" to the corresponding button on the 6000.

Also, if your device is in the serial database, you won't have to enter the command string for each button.

I've followed this thread. I have an MSC-400 (actually two) setup connected to DENON equipment using RS-232. I have created the smart macro group and tested all of the commands and they work from the computer through the USB cable to MSC-400 out the RS-232 and to the component. That part of the chain works without any problems.

The part I'm missing is I can't seem to link the MX-6000 to generate the RF trigger commands for the MSC-400 smart macros. I'm trying to drag the commands from model designer window to the MX-6000 page button. Unfortunately when I do that the command from the smart macro seems to drag to the button but nothing changes in the MX-6000 window (doesn't replace the IR command that is already there with the smart macro).

I must be missing something easy. Sorry about the Newbie question.

Sometimes I can answer my own question. For other people who have the same issue, you have to use the "Base Station" window on the right of the display. Bring up the smart macros under base station and then bring up the button (for the MX-6000 in this case) that you want to change. Click on the button once then drag the macro from the base station window to the button's macro window. The smart macro command is then added (you may have to delete the previous command in the window). Very easy...

Having said that the one thing I haven't figured out is how to have the hard buttons (like volume, mute, channel, etc) on the MX-6000 trigger an RF command. There doesn't seem to be an easy way with the punch through window.

Any hints are appreciated!

...and once again, another question it turned out I was able to answer with a little digging.

The hard keys can be programmed with macros by going back to the "Simulate" view from the "Pages" view. The buttons are shown. Click on the button and use the procedures above to program. Again, very easy once the solution is shown.
