i can only speak of the 810, which is what i responded too. it updates AUTOMATICALLY when load/start the program if there is an update available. if there are no updates it just starts up as normal. in other words it automatically checks at startup and you can not force it to check. later.

I see, I didn't understand the last part of the first paragraph in your post.
There are 10 types of people in this world,
There are those who understand binary,
and those who don't!

As of this date, there is only one version of the the MX-810 software and it automatically searches for an update when it's opened. There is also only one version of the MX-980, MSC-400 and KP-900 software and they are updateable. All of the other remotes have both updateable and non-updateable versions. Other than the MX-810, the software has an update button.

Hope that helps.

So, now the MX-810 is not downloading at all... What's next?

I even tried to rebuild a new one from scratch and it doesn't download.

If your MX-810 is acting totally bricked and unresponsive, there's a reset button. Open the battery door and look through the little slot above the battery where you can see a bit of the circuit board. At the bottom is a little 4-hole plug, and just above that a little silver device with a circular raised center. That center is the reset button. Press it with a toothpick or other non-metallic object and hold it down for 4-5 seconds. That will clear whatever caused it to freeze.

I don't remember whether you get the default activities page or the "can't find program" page, but either way, it will now accept uploads.

I am also experiencing this update bug on vista (without sp1). Have tried resetting and erasing config to no avail. I will keep trying and hopefully it will work but I am starting to lose my patience.

Interesting. I was able to update just fine under Vista 64 bit WITH SP1 installed, however, after that, I realized there aren't 64 bit drivers for the MX-810 yet(?). So I can't get Vista to recognize the remote.

Hopefully URC has them in the works because 64 bit is where everything is headed. I'm actually a bit surprised they don't have any 64 bit drivers out yet.

The problem isnt that it doesnt update the windows program. It doesnt update the remote's firmware etc.

When you get vista to recognise your remote you might experience this.

I've been dealing with this BS for a week now, and there's only one thing left to do, go buy a Mac and install XP running parallels. I can't get the MX-810 to download and have tried everything, nada.

The real problem starts with Microsoft, at least from URC's standpoint and I agree. They were ready for the new Vista OS, then Microsoft changed Active Sync to something else, which screwed them and the MX-950 will probably never run on Vista, period. URC contacted Microsoft but they refused to give them and access to Vista. URC is just too small of a company for Microsoft to care.

Why do you want to let URC off the hook for this?

URC should have tested it with Vista SP1 before putting a live update out there that was incompatible with the OS. That's on them, not MS.

URC should be responded to my e-mails about the issue. That's on URC, not MS.

URC should have fixed the problem by now. That's on URC, not MS.

Well, things are really screwy. I had to reinstall the software -- starting off with the enjoyable exercise of finding the serial number. That was no easier the second time. I'm running WIndowsXP, so this should be straight forward. I then start the program and get message about an update. I say OK and it asks me to restart the program when finished. I do that and when I start again it has another update, Same thing thing over and over. Finally, I forget about the update and decide to swap in my new Pioneer Elite reciever for my old Onkyo.

Programming was very straight forward. Seems that I got all 6 devices rearranged in about 10 minutes. I then update the MX-810. The screen is all garbled -- mostly blue. I tried the reset fix described above, but no help. I can use the software and send the updates to the remote, but the screen stays garbled. I'm really in a fix as all of my components are in a cabinet only accessible via the MX-810's RC.

Could somebody please help me before the whole family tries to kill me.

EDIT: What to they say -- the 8 time is a charm:-). Well, I did a couple of more updates trying different combinations of saving and note saving and am now able to send what seems like a good update to the remote.

If I buy a used MX-810, will I be able to download the software for it?

I went to the URC web site, and the download link leads to a registration page that asks for serial number and some personal details. Given that the original owner already registered it with the serial number, will I be able to re-register with the same serial number, and download the software?

The best thing to do is call URC and find out directly from them. The software you get from their website is not the updateable version though. That's only available through dealers.
