In some installations, we have found that trying to plug the AC supply into a different outlet, or without a surge protector can help. However, in 99.9% of installations it doesn't make any difference to an RF situation.

If a tech support person suggested that we say to ALWAYS avoid surge suppressors is dead wrong. It is something to try after running out of places to put the RFX unit, not a standard procedure.
