All of my remotes have discrete zone2 power and switching with a jump to the actual device, i.e. cable box, cd, dvd, tuner, ipod, etc. but no punch thru volume from zone1.
Basically any remote I do that has zone2 you will see two identical devices in the programming with one being called for by zone1 and one being called for by zone2. This gives the user full functionality and control of all sources regardless of the zone without interfering with another zones volume.
Obviously multiple sources such as dual cable boxes would be ideal so zone1 can watch a program while zone2 can listen to music choice, but not every customer is up for that.
