The Properties window is not actually a settings window you have to keep opening and closing or applying the settings from, it's closer to an undockable toolbox. Everything you do in there is instantly applied to the button you were working on without clicking on the "X" or needing an "OK/Apply" button.

If you leave that window open (assuming you have enough screen real estate) you can simply click on another button and start working on it...
