Well, if I understand correctly, it WILL NOT output upconverted DVDs over component - just HDMI.
But HD-DVDs, on the other hand, can be viewed at 720p or 1080i over component *as long as* they have not been encoded with a copy protection flag that limits component to 480i/480p. However IIRC this flag will not be used for a few years yet (giving you time to upgrade to a TV with HDMI).
