I had the same problem with a DVD player until I figured out that the last TV I had it hooked to would accept Progressive scan output, and the new TV would not. After fussing with the units buttons for awhile I finally got it out of Progressive scan and from then on the image looked fine.

BTW, the progressive signal to the non-progressive TV had confused it. I had to unplug the the TV for awhile and then plug it back in to get it to accept any signal at all on it's Video input. It's possible feeding a progressive signal to a non progressive set caused a similar confusion with your DVD player.

Good luck. I know I was certainly puzzled and frustrated when a similar thing happened to me.
