Let's make a simple scenario

there is you , a loved one and a really bad person that will do anything to kill your loved one. You have a gun pointed at the bad person and he has a gun pointed at your loved one ready to fire.

Do you go:
a) I want to save my loved one so you shoot and eventually kill the bad guy.
b) I don't want to kill anyone so I won't shoot.

Both scenarios are very rational in that scenario, it just depends what you value more not killing someone or saving your loved one.
