I bought a 2nd hand Fire TV box, which seems to be slightly different to the US version in socketry. I was teaching it IR codes via the Video Storm thing mentioned above, but it turns out to already respond to the TV's remote signals, which can only be reaching it via HDMI from TV to amp and from amp to Fire unit - double checked by removing adaptor etc. Now that is clever...
