When the remote uses an extender, it reserves it with an allocate command.
When the pronto executes and ActionList (from start to finish even across page jumps) all extenders specified by Actions in the ActionList are allocated for the duration of the execution. So, if you have multiple Prontos using 1 or more 'shared' extenders, you could get 'Extender Already In Use' popups when you try to do something on remotes at the same time. This is why Philips recommended that extenders be dedicated to rooms/remotes.
I personally use a shared extender for 1 purpose, to control lights in the house. I don't use it for multi-zone receivers for example because it is too problematic.
