Assuming first of all that you have good batteries, and that you don't have any white or crusty oxidation on the battery contacts in the remote…

You could have a bad remote, or you could have a bad remote sensor in the Sharp TV. Some cell phones, when you put them in the camera mode, will see infrared light when you point and shoot at the camera. This might tell you if the remote is putting out infrared.
