edmund - I continue to use the mx-editor for the 700. Works fine. I haven't tried to search the database for codes for a while so it may still do that. Above, I meant that the mx450 archiver successfully updated the firmware for the 450 and yet it continues to be finicky with learning codes. The reason for changing to the 450 is that the screen on the 700 is failing to show the top 3 rows and getting worse. Oddly enough the screen on the 450 is also showing some peculiar signs of defectiveness, noted in previous post.

I think the solution is either: 1) hunt down a 700 in the wild (used). or 2) get a mx800 also used. Will a 800 work in the editor of the 700 (mx700-editor)? I have the mx700 editor, and I think I can find an mx800 used.
