But I now realise that all this is somewhat academic because Tonto, I believe, uses the older "Classic" method of talking to serial ports which is not supported under Snow Leopard. This leave Mac users who want to program Pronto devices the choice of going back to ProntoEdit in a VM running Windows or using Tonto in a VM running an older version of Mac OS (assuming that the VMs can talk successfully to serial ports via USB!).
